The votes have been tallied, and a projected winner has come out on top in the race for New York's 17th Congressional District seat. Incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler has emerged as the winner for the House seat representing Rockland and Putnam counties, most of Northern Westchester, and portions of southern Dutchess County, defeating Democratic challenger Mondaire Jones, according to the state Board of Elections. In response to a rise in school swatting attacks across the country, including in the Hudson Valley, US Rep. Mike Lawler is introducing legislation that would increase the prison term for those who threaten students. Westchester County is going ahead with an annual 9/11 ceremony but the event will be virtual due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
