White Plains Forceful in 53-49 Win Over Scarsdale

SCARSDALE, N.Y. - Akeem Williams and his White Plains’ teammates felt they needed to take a more assertive approach in the second half of their game with host Scarsdale, Friday.

“We came in at halftime and we realized we were settling for too many three’s in the first half,” Williams said. “Our coaches wanted us to take the ball to the basket and get easy baskets.”

The Tigers, especially Williams did this, specifically in the fourth quarter of a 53-49 Conference I victory over the Raiders in boy’s basketball game.

Williams scored a game-high 23 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Anthony Williams chipped in with 13 points and Aaron Daughtrey came off the bench to score 11 points.

Akeem Williams and Daughtrey each converted both ends of a one-and-one in the final minute to hold off a late Scarsdale charge.

White Plains led, 41-37 through three and increased its lead to seven points - 45-38 - on a pair of Akeem Williams’ power moves to the basket, resulting in layups. He later fed Anthony Williams, who took one step to the basket and laid the ball in off the glass, giving the Tigers a 48-44 lead.

Scarsdale stayed close thanks to the 3-point shooting of John Cohen, who swished two from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, and finished with a team-leading 17 points. His second three of the quarter drew Scarsdale to within one point, but White Plains (8-4) would not allow Cohen to take any more without a hand in his face.

“He was making everything,” Akeem Williams said. “We put one of our best defensive players, Darnell Everett, on him to contain him. And we didn’t want to give any of their shooters any open space.”

Jack Hewett finished with 12 points and Greg Scacchi added 11 for Scarsdale (4-8).
