Mount Vernon Spreads the Wealth in Win Over White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – White Plains did its best to stay in the game, but Mount Vernon’s five double-digit scorers helped the Knights pull away from the Tigers in the high school basketball face-off on Tuesday.

Senior Sade King and sophomore Chyna Johnson led the Knights with 13 points apiece to help give Mount Vernon a 67-54 victory at White Plains in a league game. Lubirdia Gordon, Diashia Richards and Kelli Vester each had 10 points and Infiniti Hammonds had nine points.

King also added six assists, Richards had eight rebounds and Gordon had seven boards.

After the game, Tigers coach Sue Adams pointed out to her team the way that Mount Vernon spread the ball among its players, and encouraged them to mimic that strategy in the future.

“We’ve got two great players on our team,” Adams said. “Two players can’t win a game by themselves.”

The two players to whom Adams referred were, presumably, senior guards Sofia Roman and Kim Hanlon. Roman led all scorers by a comfortable margin with 25 points, while Hanlon had 19 of her own. No other Tiger reached double digits in points.

The Knights grabbed several offensive rebounds, a fact that Adams acknowledged after the game.

“We allowed them, a couple of times, to get too many shots,” Adams said.

Mount Vernon led, 34-27, at the half. White Plains cut the lead to just three in the third quarter, but the Knights again pulled away to take a 53-42 lead into the final quarter.

The Knights stretched the lead to 13 at 61-48 with just over two minutes remaining. The Tigers used a few quick buckets to cut the lead to seven, but the Knights pulled away for good.

The Tigers are now 2-2 in league play and will host New Rochelle in another league match on Friday.

Despite the loss, Adams was pleased with the leadership the team’s upperclassmen showed in Tuesday’s game.

“They really came out and competed,” Adams said. “Our two seniors (Roman and Hanlon) really showed…how to compete.”
