White Plains Teens Trudge Through Finals & Regents

This article was edited on Wednesday afternoon to fix the incorrect date given for the Youth Bureau's job fair. The job fair will be on June 13th from 3 to 5 p.m.

Pool-side siestas, movie marathons and summer camp adventures await many White Plains High School students this June. Of course, as Mecca Sawyer said, finals come first.

“I’m dreading not passing a test because I lose all my info and I get nervous,” said Sawyer, a freshman at White Plains High School. “I prefer papers and projects because I can sit down and analyze everything.”

Before Sawyer can start pool-hopping this June she must study for the Regents exams and about 15 quizzes and finals. Sawyer and her classmates say they can’t wait for their end of the school year stress to dissipate after the last day of school on June 23.

“I’ll probably celebrate with a party,” said Sawyer, 14, who plans to babysit her younger sister this summer. “Then I’ll be at the pool. I like to go to different pools and try out new things.”

Until then Sawyer will continue to focus on her homework during the week in an attempt to avoid missing any weekend fun.

“Just stay strong,” said Sawyer. “Continue to do what you have to do.”

White Plains High School sophomore Nancy Davis advocates a similar strategy.

“When it comes down to it, it’s just stress,” said Davis who has three Regents exams and four finals ahead of her. “Stay focused so you don’t have to cram it all in at the end.”

Davis, 15, has applied for a summer job through the Youth Bureau’s summer employment program and won’t know more details about her gig until after the Youth Bureau’s June 13th job fair.

However, there’re no questions about Davis’ post-Regents plans.

“I’ll definitely do something,” Davis said. “I’ll probably go to the beach.”
