WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Brianna Peebleshas been a busy teen. She has made the honor roll every year since the sixth grade and has done 500 hours of volunteer work with the YWCA's Girls Empowered Through Meaningful Support (GEMS) program, working with younger girls. She also worked at the White Plains Youth Bureau for its after school programs.
Peebles is one of 10 White Plains High School seniors to receive the $5,000 Pat Lanza Community Service Scholarship, Frank Williams, executive director of the White Plains Youth Bureau, said. The 10 recipients, all of whom graduated in June and will be attending college in the fall, earned this scholarship for their community service and leadership in the White Plains community.
"She's a special kid," Williams said of Peebles. "She has grown up in the Youth Bureau from elementary school through now. "Part of our mission is to help kids volunteer, and she has taken a hold of that. She has been a leader in giving back to the community. We believe that she is a wonderful example of what youth should be in the city of White Plains, and she embodies that."
All recipients, Williams said, have made a difference through service to their community. Students submitted an application, including a letter of recommendation and a college acceptance letter, to be eligible for the Pat Lanza Community Service Scholarship. Once the foundation reviewed their applications, students were interviewed, and those with the top scores from the application essay and interview combined were selected.
The 10 recipients are Peebles, Ania Campbell, Jasmine Campbell, Edward Gonzales, Kristen Greto, Yan Yun Lin, Chloe Mancle, Daniela Mangano, Taylor Midgette and Saul Thelusma.
