The knife-wielding suspect, identified as Joseph J. Joy of White Plains, was distracted by customers and staff and fled the store. He was apprehended by New Castle police officers without incident.
The victim was transported to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Joy is a former employee of the supermarket and knew the victim, according to North Castle Police, who said the incident was "not random."
Joy, who has has not been released, has been charged with assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, both Class D felonies. He was arraigned at Town of North Castle Court, remanded to Westchester County Jail and is due to reappear in North Castle Court on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
