White Plains recognized the first anniversary of Detective Michael Perrys death this Sunday by naming a section of Court Street where he suffered a heart attack while pursing a shoplifter in his honor.
A Det. Michael Perry Way street sign was unveiled where Court Street meets Main Street in downtown White Plains this weekend. The White Plains Police Department and White Plains Police Benevolent Association also paid homage to Perrys family by presenting them with the citys first newly minted medal of honor.
They miss him dearly, said Public Safety Commissioner David Chong. At the end of the day Theresa doesnt have a husband and we have two twin boys that dont have a father. Certainly his parents and sisters and brothers miss him greatly as well as all of us in the department. So we thought it was a fitting honor and a fitting tribute to his family. His boys will grow up to know that their father was a hero.
Perry, who served as a White Plains police officer for seven years, was posthumously promoted to detective after he chased a career criminal out of the Galleria mall, struggled with him on Court Street and again in police facilities.
He then passed away in the White Plains Hospital on June 12, 2010.
He had unlimited potential and he was what we would consider a cops cop, said Chong. If you were working the streets and Michael was working with you, you could be sure that if you needed help Michael Perry was going to show up and be there to help you.
Perry was the first officer to die in the line of duty in 60 years, according to Chong.
