WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. October is Red Ribbon Month and the City of White Plains will hold events throughout the month promoting healthy, drug- and violence-free lifestyles for kids and celebrating those that make positive choices every day.
The month of family events begins Oct. 9 with a Leader Reception at City Hall from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and includes 14 different events throughout the month. Events include family fun nights at several community institutions, a Rock Red Day at White Plains High School Oct. 23, planting red tulips on Oct. 24 and a community scavenger hunt on Oct. 26.
This is the eighth year White Plains has celebrated Red Ribbon Month, which the U.S. Congress proclaimed a national event in 1988. It has been implemented in school districts and communities as a reminder of the need to safeguard children from environmental risk factors.
The national event honors Enrique Kiki Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who was killed in 1985 by drug traffickers.
