WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. In celebration of national Caribbean-American Heritage Month, the Westchester County Board of Legislators honored the late rapper and producer "Heavy D" and entrepreneur Vincent HoSang, two Westchester residents born in the Caribbean.
HoSang, of Chinese and Jamaican descent, came to the United States in the 1960s and opened a storefront restaurant. His wholesale food business now supplies Walmart, Costco and other supermarkets along the East Coast.
"We have to recognize Caribbean-American people because there are so many of us here, and we contribute greatly to this county," HoSang said.
Legislators honored HoSang and "Heavy D", whose real name was Dwight Errington Myers, before their regular meeting Monday.
Myers was born in Jamaica and moved to Mount Vernon in the early 1970s before hitting it big in the early days of hiphop as a rapper. In the 1990s, he was hired as the president of Uptown Records, becoming the first rapper to head a major record label.
Before his untimely death in November, Myers added several acting credits to his list of accomplishments.
This year, Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their independence.
