Seniors Cha-Cha Slide Into Summer At White Plains Pool Party

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains opens Thursday but 10-year-old Peekskill resident Marisol Mallory and her family spent the day Tuesday swimming and dancing at the senior citizen pool party and barbecue, which they attend every year.

All Westchester seniors were invited to attend the party, which drew hundreds, many of whom brought their children, grandchildren and some their great grandchildren. The free party was presented by the Westchester county Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and Senior Programs and Services.

Marisol, who everyone calls Madi, showed her mother, Kimmy and grandmother Patricia Mallory-Smith what she learned from swim lessons at the Yonkers YMCA. Her grandmother, 71, is a gym instructor who teaches in Yonkers, Riverdale and previously the Mount Vernon YMCA. She said she may be 71, but she feels 51. She then revised her statement, and said she feels even younger.

“We come to the senior picnic every year. It’s a lot of fun with my mom,” Kimmy said. “People are doing the Cha-Cha slide… They came up with the newer version of the Electric Slide where you do the Charlie Brown with it.”

In addition to the Cha-Cha slide, the band, called, Stolen Moments performed several hit songs that got many up and dancing, including some using walkers.

Yonkers residents Marcus, 9, Nathaniel, 7, and Nakyia, 6, joined in on the fun during the Cha-Cha slide. The three siblings attend a summer camp that takes them to Saxon Woods Pool often.

“I like the water park,” Marcus said. “I like everything about this park. Even the Cha-Cha slide thing. I did that real well.”

Patt Conniff, of Ossining, didn’t know about the pool party and bar-b-que and showed up to the pool thinking it had opened for the season. As a senior citizen, she was more than welcomed with her daughter Gloria and grandchildren Brian, 3, Brandon, 2, and Matthew, who is 4 months old.
