WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The White Plains Business Improvement District (BID) unveiled its second annual Earth Week Celebration, which kicks off with a tree-planting ceremony April 16 and culminates with a sustainable celebration next weekend.
Mayor Thomas Roach said he was excited about the diversity of themes taken up in the weeklong celebration.
"We welcome White Plains residents and people from throughout Westchester to join us in celebrating all things green," he said in a statement. "This year we've added three particularly exciting components: An Electric Vehicle Showcase which displays current EV models, the Renewable Energy Expo exploring various energy alternatives for residences and businesses, and the launch of the Mayor's Animal Action Network, which is really a countywide coalition of animal organizations dedicated to the no-kill movement and pet rescue."
The city and BID teamed up with Reckson, OnForce Solar, and Zipcar to sponsor the following programs:
- Roach will kick off Earth Week with a tree-planting ceremony and student music performances at City Hall at 4 p.m. on April 16.
- The library will screen the "Bag it!" documentary about America's use of plastics at 7 p.m. on April 16.
- A Renewable Energy Expo will showcase how to use solar, wind, hydro, thermal and other forms of renewable energy in your home or business to save money. Folk singer Mark Rust will perform during the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. expo at Renaissance Plaza on April 17.
- City Center 15: Cinema De Lux will show the film "Revenge of the Electric Car," which explores what happens behind the doors of major auto distributors to fuel the resurgence of electric cars, at 7 p.m. on April 18.
- A sustainable, local healthy-food forum at Temple Israel Center will feature tastings, presentations, and discussions about the importance of keeping your food sources closer to home, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 19.
- The Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel will host a garden tour featuring kindergarten through eighth-graders' work at cultivating native plants, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. April 20.
- A Sustain White Plains Celebration on April 21 will feature music, green exhibits, food, Double-Dutch jump-rope contests, a hula competition, the launch of the mayor's Animal Action Network, and an electric vehicle showcase. The noon to 4 p.m. festival will be held in a Mamaroneck Avenue tent that stretches from Main Street to Martine Avenue.
- The city will give tours of the Gedney Recycling Yard, with a presentation from Department of Public Works Commissioner Joseph Nicoletti at 11 a.m., on April 22. The Take It or Leave It Shed will also open for the season.
- The city's Recreation and Parks Department will lead volunteers in cleanups at Delfino, Gillie, and Gardella parks from 9 a.m. to noon April 22.
- The library will hold a 2 p.m. Earth Day story, song and snack session for families with children three years old and up, on April 22. Older kids in grades one through six are welcome to attend an Earth Day collage workshop led by local pop-artist Michael Albert upstairs.
