Retired White Plains Fireman Hovanec Dies at 82

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — James I. Hovanec of Elmsford died March 29. He was 82.  

Hovanec worked as a firefighter for the City of White Plains for more than 30 years before he retired. 

He was born July 22, 1929, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to Irvin and Ann Hovanec. Educated in Mount Vernon, Hovanec graduated from Edison Vocational and Technical High School. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford since 1960.   

Hovanec was predeceased by his wife, Marion (Marcsisin) Hovanec. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Larson and Jeanette van-Dorp, his son, Robert James Hovanec, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Elmsford Chapel of Ballard-Durand Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colon Cancer Coalition.
