A favorite with local seniors, the event featured a business expo, a health and wellness fair, live entertainment, and the main attraction, a presentation on the Telehealth Intervention Programs for Seniors (TIPS).
TIPS is an initiative that uses technology to remotely monitor a person’s vital signs without having to travel to a medical facility or doctor’s office.
Launched in May 2014, TIPS is a groundbreaking combination of health services, social services, and intergenerational workforce development. The program is geared towards seniors age 60 and older who are low income and have multiple chronic health conditions. The core of the program combines three key elements:
- Clinical screening of blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels and weight at least once a week, the results of which are monitored remotely and discussed at each session.
- A complete benefits assessment to make sure seniors are aware of the social programs available,
- A complete benefits assessment to make sure seniors are aware of the social programs available, such as nutrition assistance, caregiver support, and chronic disease self-management programs.
- Hands-on, intergenerational case management from a network of graduate student nurses, social work students and undergraduate volunteers from throughout Westchester.
The next senior event is the free Yorktown Senior Law Day on May 18. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jefferson Village Community Center, 3480 Hill Blvd., Yorktown. Registration is encouraged but walk-ins are welcome.
