It’s the perfect storm: The first blizzard of winter is headed our way and it’s the 30th anniversary of National Pie Day on Saturday, Jan. 23. If there was ever a reason to spend the day eating a variety of these baked, filled treats, it’s now.

Plan the weekend watching the weather from your windows while snuggling under a blanket with a hot drink and a warm slice. Organize the whole day around pies and you can even incorporate some healthy bites in-between some sweet, gooey slices of fruit, chocolate or cream.

Patti LaBelle has a bestselling line of Sweet Potato Pies at Walmart (high in vitamin A and C) and there are numerous recipes to try all over the internet that have a prep time of just 10 minutes.

Indulge your inner pie laziness and steal ideas from the Celebrity Apprentice Season 7 (available on YouTube), which pits two pie-baking teams. Or get the giggles watching the original pie entertainment: pies in the face comedy, also known as “pieing,” first seen in silent films.

National Pie Day was conceived in 1986 by the American Pie Council to commemorate Crisco’s 75th anniversary, according to the National Day Calendar. The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age.
