Bacon has been reinvented to complement everything from cocktails and cake batter to candy, ice cream and air fresheners.

Bacon is made from pork belly in the U.S. and Canada. Elsewhere in the world, the side and back cuts of pork are used. The meat is cured in either a salt brine or in a salt pack and then dried, boiled or smoked, the website says.

The World Health Organization categorizes processed meat with tobacco but that hasn’t slowed bacon’s popularity. U.S. bacon sales climbed 9.5 percent in 2013 to an all-time record of almost $4 billion, reports Live Science.
