The first day of winter, or the Winter Solstice, occurs every year either on Dec. 21 or Dec. 22. It is the day with the least amount of daylight hours during the year. As winter wears on, the amount of daylight the Northern Hemisphere receives will get gradually longer until the Summer Solstice in June.
Humans have been tracking the seasons for thousands of years. The most notable tool used to track the seasons is Stonehenge in England. As many as 4,000 people gather at the monument during the Winter Solstice.
