Burke Rehabilitation Hospital To Hold Annual Wheelchair Games

WHITE PLAINS, NY – Burke Rehabilitation Hospital draws wheelchair athletes of all ages throughout the tri-state area to its annual Wheelchair Games.

Athletes compete in sports such as table tennis, track and field, and a slalom obstacle course.

“It’s like having the Paralympics in your backyard,” said Wheelchair Games co-chair Tracey Bogart, in a statement. “It truly is an inspiring event and every year Burke is proud to host such an amazing group of athletes.”

The 34th Annual Wheelchair Games will take place on Sept. 28 on the main campus at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, 785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains. Field events start at 9 a.m. and track races start at 1:30 p.m.

Along with the Games, the hospital is also hosting its newly re-vamped Heels & Wheels 5K Road Race that will now include walkers.

“We want to make sure everyone can participate,” said Heather Massimo, director of the Fitness Center at Burke and 5K co-organizer, in a statement regarding adding walkers. The Heels & Wheels event allows for both wheelchair athletes and runners to compete together.

Both the Wheelchair Games and Heels and Wheels are free for spectators.  The day will also include face painting, a silent auction and other carnival games.
