A blanket of unhealthy air covering much of New York as a result of Canadian wildfires has caused a city in Westchester to close its schools. A superintendent in New York is no longer in charge of her school district, which is currently under investigation by federal officials. A large school district in the region will start the calendar year remotely due to an increase COVID-19 cases amid the emergence of the Omicron strain. The Mount Vernon City School District said it plans to reopen for in-person learning on Tuesday, Jan. 18. The district had switched to 100-percent virtual instruction on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
