'It's Time For Dad To Retire': Popular Long Island Diner To Close After 50 Years In Business After 50 years of serving locals and visitors alike everything from hefty omelets to Greek dishes, a Long Island landmark diner will close later this month. The Plainview Diner, located on Old Country Road in Plainview, will serve its last meal on Sunday, Sept. 25. "With the lease expiring it's time for dad to retire," said Pam Rooney, the daughter of owner John Papavasilopoulos. Papavasilopoulos began at the diner as a dishwasher in 1972 and worked his way up to owner in 1990.
