Suffolk County Marine Conservatory Among Non-Profits Awarded $1.8M In Grants
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a combined $1.8 million in grants would be split between 27 parks and historic projects across the state, including a conservatory on Long Island. Hochul announced that the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (also known as AMSEAS), based out of Hamptons Bay, was one of the grant recipients on Friday, Jan. 5. Receiving a total of $62,280, the conservatory will use the money to create exhibits and events appreciating the natural resources on eastern Long Island using both modern scientific study and Native American tradition. Humpback Whale Carcass Floats Into Shinnecock Bay
Authorities are working to determine the cause of death of a humpback whale that was found on Long Island. At about 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1, the carcass of the whale floated into Shinnecock Bay in Southampton. Southampton Town Police officers and staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society then arrived on the scene. Dolphin Found Stranded In Suffolk County Shoreline
A dolphin that washed up on a Long Island shoreline had to be euthanized following last month's storms, officials said. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society responded to Jockey Creek in Southold late last month, where there was a report of a stranded dolphin that required assistance. Officials said that the necropsy on the 6-foot-11 female dolphin found that she was aged and showed signs of a compromised liver. Humpback Whale Washes Up On Shore Near Montauk
A massive humpback whale washed up off a Long Island shore over the weekend. The carcass of the 27-foot female whale was found near Montauk at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, officials said. The latest sighting is the seventh stranding of a whale off a Long Island shore this year, and 52nd since 2017. A massive whale was found washed up on a Long Island shore over the weekend. Members of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society responded to Amagansett late on Saturday, May 30, where there was a report of a 35-foot female humpback whale on the beach. A massive 5-foot sea turtle was found dead on Long Island. The rare leatherback sea turtle was spotted washed up on Callahan’s Beach in Fort Salonga in Suffolk County on Wednesday, July 24, officials said. A humpback whale is now free and roaming the waters off the Long Coast after getting entangled in a fishing net. At approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday, July 15, Southampton Town Police Bay Constables responded to a report of a humpback whale entangled in a fishing net approximately one-quarter mile southwest of the TownlineBeach in Sagaponack. Injuries were found during an examination to determine the cause of death of the deceased humpback whale that washed up at Cupsogue County Parks in Westhampton Beach Sunday, May 5. Officials performed their necropsy examination of the animal on Tuesday, May. 7. There's an outpouring of sadness over news that a dead 37-foot female humpback whale washed up on a beach in the Hamptons.
