Bay Shore resident Emerson Alvarado, 25, was charged on Thursday, Feb. 20 following a weeks-long investigation after the crash in Bay Shore on Monday, Feb. 3, Suffolk County Police said.

According to police, Victor Gonzalez Arevalo and Dany Ibarra Martinez were walking northbound on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore, before crossing Fairtown Road, when they were struck by the vehicle traveling northbound on Fifth Avenue.

The vehicle was making a right turn onto Fairtown Road at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Gonzalez, a Brentwood resident, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with life-threatening injuries. Martinez, also of Brentwood, sustained a minor injury to his left foot.

Police said that after striking the pair, the driver - later identified as Alvarado - fled east on Fairtown Road. He was arrested this week by Suffolk County Police investigators.
