A 20-year-old Long Island woman was arrested after allegedly throwing a rock through a window to break into an area elementary school.

Maria Campione, of Island Park, was arrested around 10:20 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 1, after the Hewlett Fire Department responded to Hewlett Elementary School on Broadway for a false alarm, said the Nassau County Police.

According to detectives, Campione allegedly used a rock to break the front door window of the school, then entered the building and was observed by a school employee on surveillance cameras running through the hallways.

While in the school she also triggered the fire alarm causing the Hewlett Fire Department to respond to a false alarm.

Responding police officers were able to locate Campione a short distance away from the school. After a brief foot pursuit, she was placed into custody.

Campione was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and false reporting of an incident. She is being held until arraignment on Thursday, Jan. 2.
