A teenager from Bay Shore allegedly driving drunk near a busy intersection in Hauppauge left another motorist hospitalized after being involved in a head-on crash, police said.

Johnny Mendez, 18, was driving a Subaru Impreza northbound on Lincoln Boulevard, just north of Vets Highway at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, when he veered into the southbound lane and struck a Jeep Cherokee being driven by Francis Squillace, 61, head-on.

According to police, Squillace, a Hicksville resident, was transported to Stony Brook Hospital with serious injuries. Mendez and his 17-year-old passenger were also transported to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

Mendez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, June 19.
