Caesar Powell, age 29, and Tara Barton, age 23, both of Rocky Point, are each charged with multiple felony counts of burglary, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, a man heard someone in his home located at Gibbs Pond Road in Nesconset. He called his grandson who contacted authorities, the DA's Office said.

Sini said the man hid in his kitchen armed with a knife. He then allegedly had a confrontation with Powell and Barton and suffered a laceration on his hand that required stitches.

The DA's Office said the defendants were seen leaving the home by a Suffolk County police officer, and they were brought into custody. Powell allegedly had a knife and a screwdriver with him.

“This was an extremely frightening incident for the homeowner, who, despite having two strangers break into his home, was able to call for help and fight off the pair,” Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron said. “I would like to commend the victim for his bravery, Officer Naglieri for the swift apprehension of these defendants, and the District Attorney’s Office for holding them accountable.”

Powell and Barton were arraigned on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Powell's bail was set at $150,000 cash, $300,000 bond or $500,000 partially-secured bond. He is due to appear back in court on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Barton's bail was set at $75,000 cash, $150,000 bond or $300,000 partially-secured bond. She is due to appear back in court on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
