DOT Region 8 Spokeswoman Gina DiSarro confirmed that department officials will likely look into lowering speed limits and adding signage in work zones in the future to help state police monitor interstate roadways. However, there are no plans to change the current setup along the stretch of I-84 where two accidents occurred last week, one of which involved a fatality.
“We have no plans to do anything differently with that roadway,” DiSarro said Monday.
She also said that the stretch of I-84 in question was set up and marked properly at the time of the accident.
Last week, a 2004 Freightliner was approaching traffic in the left lane of the I-84 when it crashed into the back of a pickup truck before it continued into the rear of a Sprinter van. The occupants of the Sprinter van and another vehicle were trapped inside and had to be extricated.
Six vehicles were involved in the crash on July 13 between Exit 5A (Drury Lane/Route 54) and Route 208 (Exit 5), which closed the roadway for almost seven hours.
Christopher Marks, 43, of Chester, did not survive the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office. This accident is being investigated by State Police Troop F.
Meanwhile, two days earlier, on July 11, a crash involving two cars and a tractor-trailer closed the same stretch of roadway for four hours.
The interstate roadways overseen by the Region 8 office include I-84 and I-684.
