New York High School Athletes Can Now Profit Off Name, Image, Likeness
High school student-athletes in New York who make a name for themselves can now profit off it. At its quarterly Executive Committee meeting, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced that it has revised its rule regarding amateur athletes statewide, and that student-athletes can now profit off their name, image, or likeness. Students at Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde high schools are in hot water after allegedly collaborating to create an NCAA basketball tournament-like bracket to allow participants to “vote” on their female classmates. Police are investigating after Pace University's baseball coach allegedly whacked a freshman player in the face with a bat during a locker room tirade after a loss, then failed to call an ambulance and instead stormed into his office. The first Division I college basketball tournaments have been canceled due to the spread of the novel strain of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The Ivy League has canceled its men's and women's basketball conference tournaments because of concerns about COVID-19. The league made the announcement on Tuesday, March 10. The four-team tournaments were scheduled for Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
