SOUTHWEST DUTCHESS, N.Y. -- The Hudson Valley region hosts the New York State Special Olympics Winter Games for the first time ever from Feb. 19 to 21.

Opening ceremonies will be held on Feb. 19 with a parade of athletes, speeches and entertainment at 8 p.m. at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie.

Registration for volunteers is available up until the event with walk-ins welcome.

The events on Feb. 20 are as follows:

  • Alpine Skiing – Holiday Mountain Ski Area, 99 Holiday Mountain Road, Monticello
  • Figure Skating and Speed Skating, 10 a.m. – McCann Ice Arena, 14 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie
  • Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing, 9 a.m. – Bowdoin Park, 85 Sheafe Road, Poughkeepsie
  • Floor Hockey – Stewart Air National Guard Base, 1 Maguire Way, Newburgh

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the support the Hudson Valley has shown both Special Olympics New York and the nearly 900 athletes from around New York State who’ll arrive here next month for the 2016 State Winter Games,” said Neal J. Johnson, Special Olympics New York president and chief executive officer. “These athletes are the beneficiaries of the hard work and dedication of countless individuals, from local officials and the Games Organizing Committee, to hundreds of volunteers who’ve selflessly given their time. They’ll enjoy a weekend of competition and camaraderie they’ll never forget. We thank all who’ve worked to make the 2016 Winter Games the success we all know they will be.”
