The call came in around 3 a.m.for a fire at 300 Mansion St.,  just as the snow and ice were beginning to hammer the area, said Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire on all floors of the two-story home in the rear, he added.

The residents, who were able to escape, stood in the frigid weather as firefighters from Poughkeepsie, Arlington and Fairview worked to save their home, Johnson said.

"At least three to four inches of snow fell while we were working," he added.

Although firefighters worked for more than three hours, they were not able to save the two-story home, Johnson said.

"The guys did an excellent job on all fronts," he added.

The department received coverage assistance at the fire station from New Hamburg, Arlington, and MobileLife EMS.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, foul play is not suspected.
