Most people who get COVID-19 fully recover. However, a small percentage of individuals experience a range of mid to long-term symptoms after they recover. These symptoms are collectively known as post COVID-19 condition, or more commonly as “long COVID.”

What Are the Symptoms of Long COVID?

People who have long COVID may find that their ability to perform daily activities, such as work or household chores, is affected. The most common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Memory, concentration, or sleep problems
  • Persistent cough
  • Chest pain
  • Trouble speaking
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Fever

How Long Will These Symptoms Last?

Right now, it’s difficult to predict how long the symptoms of long COVID will last for any given patient. There is still much for us to learn about it, but current research shows that patients can experience lingering symptoms for weeks or even months after having COVID-19. Fortunately, the research also shows that patients can improve with time.

Can I Give Long COVID to Others?

No, post COVID-19 condition cannot be passed to others. Since these symptoms are the result of a long-term condition following infection with the COVID-19 virus, the virus can no longer be passed to other people.

What You Need to Know

If you think you may have long COVID, talk with your doctor. They will help you to determine whether this is the case and can provide you with the care you need to manage your symptoms.

The best way you can protect yourself against getting long COVID is by doing everything you can to avoid getting infected with the COVID-19 virus. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is still the best and safest way to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Contact Sun River Health or your local health care provider to make an appointment for your vaccine today, or to learn more about vaccination.
