St. Patrick's Day Parade Steps Off In Wappingers Falls On Saturday

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. -- The 21st annual Dutchess County St. Patrick’s Parade will be held Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in Wappingers Falls.

The parade will begin at the corner of West Main Street and Delavergne Avenue, winding through the village of Wappingers Falls.

The event is kid-friendly. Thousands of parade-goers will be in attendance, and local merchants will be ready to serve them.

Bruce Coneeny was selected as this year's grand marshal. Coneeny was born and raised in the Bronx by first- and second-generation Irish-American parents. He attended St. Rita's and St. Mary's Parish schools in the Bronx and attended Salesian High School. Coneeny eventually moved to Dutchess County and has called it home for 48 years.

A 1969 graduate of Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, Coneeny attended Dutchess Community College until 1971. He served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Puget Sound AD 38 during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1975.

Coneeny joined the East Fishkill Police Department in 1976 and was the first full-time police officer under Chief Andrew Criscolo, concurrently belonging to the East Fishkill Fire Department as a rescue squad lieutenant.

In 1980, Coneeny joined the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office and served for 29 years, retiring as chief of detectives. During his tenor, he received several commendations for felony arrests, lifesaving and critical-incident negotiations.

After retiring in 2009, Coneeny continued helping others as an active supporter of the Characinoid Syndrome Cancer Group and volunteering at hospice and as a board-certified ombudsman for area nursing homes. He was also PBA bagpiper for more than 20 years.
