West Nile Virus Detected In Mosquitoes In Rockland County
Two pools of mosquitos in Rockland County have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Department of Health is cautioning. Infected mosquitoes were collected from traps in Orangetown and Clarkstown during the week of Monday, June 21, marking the first confirmed cases of West Nile in Rockland this summer. Rockland health officials are warning residents to take cover after receiving confirmation that the first pool, or group, of mosquitoes, have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the county this summer. Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert confirmed Friday the season's first human case of West Nile virus in a county resident. The patient is over the age of 50 years and tested positive for the illness based on clinical symptoms and preliminary laboratory findings. A pool of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile Virus in Rockland County, according to the New York State Department of Health.
