"Since Hurricane Harvey, the two gas stations located in the Town of Highlands – one in Highland Falls and one in Fort Montgomery – have seemingly taken advantage of residents by charging $3.15 for regular gas," Skoufis said in a letter to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
"Both stations are owned by the same company, Chestnut Petroleum Distributors, Inc. For perspective, a gas station in adjacent Cornwall-on-Hudson is currently charging $2.65 for regular gas," Skoufis continued in the letter.
Skoufis went on to say he felt the residents of Highlands were exploited because of their relative seclusion thanks to the geography surrounding the Hudson River, Storm King Mountain and Bear Mountain.
Average gas prices are just now starting to fall following Hurricane Harvey, according to AAA. The average price for gas in New York is $2.82 a gallon, down from $2.83 yesterday.
