Orange County Lawmakers Remain Undecided On Kiryas Joel/Palm Tree Vote

GOSHEN, N.Y. – Lawmakers in Orange County are scheduled to vote on a proposal that would allow the Village of Kiryas Joel to break from the Town of Monroe to create the Town of Palm Tree on Thursday, but the outcome of said vote remains very much in question, according to the Times Herald-Record.

A proposal to have Kiryas Joel break from the Town of Monroe could clear a major hurdle on Thursday.

Hearts and minds have shifted in recent months as details of the breakaway have been ironed out. Jim DiSalvo, a Highland Falls Republican, said he is warming to the idea of a break now that all of Palm Tree would fall into Kiryas Joel's schooling system, the Record Reported.

County Legislators need to come to a two-thirds majority to approve the measure, which would then be put to vote in the November general election. Legislators will vote on the proposal at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
