MONROE, N.Y. — A father-son duo from Monroe are receiving accolades in New Jersey for flipping an old dive bar yet preserving its speakeasy feel.

Brookchester Bar & Liquors has become Barrel & Brew, thanks to Albert Tirado Jr., 32, and Albert Tirado, now of Old Tappan, N.J.

The Tirados bought the place just over a year ago and began renovating in Februrary.

While they liked the location and privacy it offered in the corner of the shopping plaza, they felt it deserved a fresher, sleeker look.

They tore up the worn tile floors and added wood floors. They opened up the side wall revealing a row of windows.

The pair installed four televisions, a karaoke machine, 10 new taps in addition to the original four and added a separate entrance to the bar.

Beers go for $6 or $7, and come mostly from local, niche craft breweries like Alementary Ale House in Hackensack, Brix City out of Little Ferry and many more.

The Tirados also restocked the liquor store with craft spirits and beers, which has brought customers from nearly an hour away.

The most popular drink on the menu is a house-infused cocktail made with pineapple punch, Captain Morgan, Malibu Rum, lime and orange juice.

BARREL & BREW IS LOCATED AT 872 RIVER ROAD, NEW MILFORD.
