Somers Fifth-Grade Travel Basketball Team Wins Division Title SOMERS, N.Y. -- They say that defense wins championships. The Somers Boys Fifth Grade traveling basketball team is proof. The Somers squad won the Brewster Super League A Division title on June 22 at the Brewster Sports Center, 19 Sutton Pl., Brewster, N.Y. The boys clamped down on defense in the championship game to beat Venom, a team that had beaten them by 20 points in the regular season finale. Venom jumped out to an early lead, but Somers was able to settle down, dominate the boards and play stellar defense -- which translated into opportunities on offense. Somers, who finished …

You likely won’t win. Allan and Ramaswamy finished six out of 197 teams at the 2015 National Speech and Debate Association’s National Championship from June 14-19 in Dallas. Lyra Fuchs and Hannah Stein were among 11 Hastings High School students who won 25 awards at the nation’s longest-running recognition program for creative teenagers in grades 7 through 12.
