Nelson Vargas, 60, was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 1, following an investigation into an altercation that took place at approximately 3:15 a.m., New Rochelle Police Capt. Cosma Costa stated.

It is alleged that Vargas stabbed his 21-year-old son in the chest with a large kitchen knife after an argument broke out in a Drake Avenue apartment complex. Vargas’ son was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries to his lung and heart.

According to reports, Vargas’ victim underwent emergency surgery, but remains in stable condition.

Vargas arrested following the stabbing and charged with first-degree assault, a felony. He was arraigned on Thursday, Jan. 2 in New Rochelle City Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $75,000 bond.
