Michael Lewis Neborak,  a Somers native who lived in town 23 years before moving to Stamford, died unexpectedly last month. He was 24.

He was the son of Michael K. and Melissa Neborak and the older brother of Margaux Neborak of Somers. A Celebration of Life was held at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah and a Memorial Service at the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco.

In 2011, Mikey graduated with honors from Somers High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Computer Science from Cornell University in December 2015. He earned his Master of Engineering in Computer Science at Cornell in December 2016, achieving a 3.88/4.0 cumulative GPA.

He savored that final year at Cornell especially because his sister Margaux was admitted to Cornell in 2015, so they met up as often as possible, despite their different majors and campus locations.

After graduation, Mikey worked full-time as a software engineer at Interactive Brokers in Greenwich, where he loved developing application programming with a supportive team. He previously interned three summers as a software engineer at Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA, at Ericsson Mediaroom in Mountain View, and at FactSet Research Systems headquarters in Norwalk.

Since his Cornell graduation, Mikey served as an ambassador for the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network. Mikey enjoyed talking with Westchester area high school seniors interested in Cornell, discussing Engineering, Computer Science, and college life. He had a generous heart and would support anyone in need.

Always an avid reader, Mikey could knowledgeably discuss almost any topic, and he had multiple interests.

His love of reading contributed to his winning first place in the Somers Intermediate School’s fourth-grade Spelling Bee in which 241 students participated, and this was one of his fondest childhood memories.

A former member of the Somers High School cross country team, Mikey was always an avid runner and worked out daily.

Learning to snow ski at age 4, he thrilled in skiing double black diamond trails out West with his family and friends. His favorite family vacation was to Flathead Lake Lodge, a ranch in Big Fork, MT, where he learned to ride horses.

He took pride in passing the NY State boating exam at age 11. Mikey quickly became his family’s favorite captain for wakeboarding, in which he also excelled. This past summer he relished many weekends boating and teaching his friends to wakeboard and wakesurf.

He had a passion for learning about and figuring out how to use any technology or electronic device. Music especially captivated Mikey. He played the piano for almost 20 years, edited music for his professional video productions, and composed electronic dance music.

He is survived by his parents, his sister Margaux, his grandmother Mary Jo Lewis, his Aunt Michelle Duffy Fosenburg and Uncle Jeff Fosenburg, his Aunt Connie and Uncle Tim Guba, and his cousins Allison and Jaclyn Guba, Christina Duffy, and Caitlin Duffy Parker and her husband Steven Parker. Mikey is also survived by his girlfriend of four years Jessie Logel and her family, all of Somers, who he considered part of his extended family.

Memorial contributions may be made to “Somers Central School District – Computer Science,” noting on the check memo line, “In Memory of Mikey Neborak.”

The Neboraks wish to support furthering Somers High School’s computer science curriculum, which did not yet exist when Mikey attended SHS, but it was his wish to have had those advanced opportunities prior to attending Cornell.

Checks may be mailed to the Somers Central School District, 250 Rt. 202, Somers, NY 10589. All donations will be accepted and acknowledged by the Board of Education.
