Edward Mooney, 82, Formerly Of Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. – Edward J. Mooney, formerly of Somers, died Aug. 26, surrounded by his family. He was 82  

Mooney served in the military during the Korean Conflict and retired from New York Telephone Company after 40 years. A former resident of High Bridge, Bronx, N.Y., Pearl River, N.Y. and Lavallette, N.J., he was a lifetime member of the Pearl River Elks.  

His community service included work with Meals on Wheels. Known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Mooney enjoyed his retirement at the Jersey Shore. He is remembered for his wry wit, sage advice and love of poetry, his family said. 

Mooney is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia; five children, Ed Mooney, Kerry Mooney, Greg Mooney, Tricia Miller and Jennifer Giansante; and 10 grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aedan's Church in Pearl River.
