WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – A federal judge ordered on Friday, Sept. 19, that Westchester businessman Selim "Sam" Zherka must stay in jail until he stands trial, reports LoHud.com.
Prosecutors said Zherka, a Somers resident, has a "very strong incentive to flee" with financial resources abroad. On a bank loan application, Zherka claimed his net worth is $61.8 million, excluding foreign assets, credit and $2.5 million in personal items and other property according to the report.
As previously reported by The Daily Voice, the publisher of The Westchester Guardian was indicted on Sept. 18 for obtaining more than $146 million in loans from three banks for the purchase and/or refinancing of apartment house complexes in New England, Tennessee, New Jersey and New York, but lied about the prices and down payments.
