Somers Lions Feed 2,000 Hungry Humans

SOMERS, N.Y. - When Somers Lion member Warren Alexanian describes himself as “in charge of food,” he's not kidding. His shopping list for breakfast included “35 cases of sweet sausage, 1,800 eggs, 36 5-pound bags of pancake mix, 2 pounds of paper plates, three or four cases of syrup, eight cases of orange juice, four cases of apple juice, two cases of cream cheese, two cases of butter and 100 pounds of coffee."

The Somers Lions Club’s annual Pancake Breakfast began at 8 a.m. Sunday, and by 11 a.m. more than 2,000 guests had been served. “Last year, we had about 1,500 altogether, so we’ve already exceeded that,” said Alexanian.

One of the main beneficiaries of the annual fundraiser is the Somers Youth Sports Organization, an all-volunteer, nonprofit group dedicated to promoting, organizing and administering sports programs for kids in town. It includes baseball, soccer, football, cheerleading, wrestling, lacrosse and basketball. The group is not funded by the town.

“We set this up so all the kids can pick up their sports uniforms today,” said Lions Club President Rick Morrissey. “Then they come in and have breakfast. It’s a great marriage.”

The work began the day before. “We started setting up on Friday afternoon about 1 o’clock,” Alexanian said. “They don’t have the facilities here to feed this many people. We have to bring our own grills. We rented 100 tables and 300 chairs.”

From the entrance doors to the Somers High School cafeteria and the mountains of food, hungry breakfasters ran a gauntlet of civic associations whose information tables lined the route. The Somers Newcomers were there, as was At Home in Somers, the Somers Rotary, the Somers Historical Society, the new Somers Dog Park, Energize Somers, the Somers Litter Task Force and others.

As Morrissey said, “The Lions’ slogan is ‘We Serve.’ We not only serve the community, we serve pancakes.”
