Robert Martin, 81, Substitute Teacher of Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. – Robert "Bob" F. Martin, of Somers, died unexpectedly April 23. He was 81.  

The son of Francis Martin and Mary Coonan, he grew up in Bronx, N.Y., and attended Dewitt Clinton High School. Martin served for five years in the U.S. Army Infantry and later earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Iona College. 

Martin worked as an English teacher for the Yonkers public school system and retired after 35 years. After retiring and until his death, he continued to work as a substitute teacher and English as a second language tutor. In recent years, he volunteered with Putnam Hospital Center. 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ursula; a son, Robert C. Martin; a daughter,  Lynda; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, James Martin.

Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church in Croton Falls. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
