WESTCHESTER, N.Y. Rejoice, tomato lovers. All sorts of tomatoes -- plump, fragrant and colorful -- are appearing in local farmers markets. This is also the season to dig out your recipes for spinach, peppers, broccoli, shallots and celery dishes, for they too grow to their tastiest in the fall. Onions are freshly harvested and new potatoes abound in all sizes and, again, in different colors.
Almost all local farmers markets will remain open through the pumpkin-picking season and a few will even continue through the winter, with produce varying according to the season.
South Salems Gossett Brothers Nursery Farm Market, for example, will continue to be open year-round from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. It is one of the few area markets that offers a fresh seafood stand.
North Salems Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard will be open seven days a week through the end of December. Its Fall Festival, featuring apple picking, doughnuts and special events is already in progress.
Both Chappaqua and Mt. Kisco have year-round indoor markets on Saturdays. In Chappaqua it's at the Church of St. Mary, 191 South Greeley Avenue from 8:30am to 1 p.m. and in Mt. Kisco it's at the Main Streets Boys & Girls Club from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A portion of the Mt. Kisco market's profits go to the club.
A farmers market in Croton-on-Hudson run by Community Markets is held in the lot on Municipal Place, off Route 9, (Wednesdays 1:30 - 5:30 p.m.) and will continue through November.
The popular farmers market at Katonahs John Jay Homestead, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be tucking the tables away on October 12 and will re-open in the spring.
Somers Muscoot Farm will continue its Sunday market (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) through the end of October and then re-open in the spring.
The 20 Hudson Valley vendors who stock Yorktowns Farmers Market (Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.) will close shop at the end of October as well. The market is located behind the Yorktown Heights Engine Company #1, on Commerce Street.
Cortlandts Hudson Valley Hospital Center holds a monthly organic food market on Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., complete with staff from the hospitals nutrition department to provide hands-on information. The market will be held on September 25 and October 30 and will conclude on November 20.
Peekskill has the honor of hosting Northern Westchesters oldest farmers market, in operation for more than 20 years. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and is located on Bank Street. It will close for the season on Saturday November 17, just before Thanksgiving.
