SCARSDALE, N.Y. - Some of Scarsdale’s best and brightest will soon be taking their talents down under, as they perform a concert for music enthusiasts in Australia.

This month, the Scarsdale High School Wind Ensemble will take a trek to Sydney, Australia, where they will perform free Composers Concerts during February Break at the Sydney Town Hall and in Melbourne.

All 71 students and six chaperones will take off on Wednesday, Feb. 15, missing two and a half days of class. They will perform three concerts, including performances with the Melbourne Community Band, Melbourne Grammar and Fort Street High School in Sydney. Famed American composer John Mackey will be the guest composer in residence, “thanks to a generous anonymous donation of airline miles and funds.”

In addition to Mackey, students will perform under the eye of world-renowned composer John Lynch, of the Sydney Conservatorium, who will serve as guest conductor. There will also be a “send-off concert” performed by students in Scarsdale the day before the trip so parents can hear the melodies planned for Australia.

During the trip, the Wind Ensemble will also present a world premiere by composer Brandon Scott Rumsey, titled “Wanderlust,” marking their first “solo” premiere.”

Outside of performances, students will have the opportunity to explore their cities, including tours of Melbourne, a trip on “one of the largest suburban light rail networks in the world,” watch an Australian rules football game and tour the Rocks area, walking as the convicts did on narrow cobblestone alleys, when they were first transported from England as prisoners,” according to the district. They will then explore Sydney and take part in a masterclass at Sydney Conservatorium.
