Scarsdale Student Begins and Ends in Kindergarten

Rachel Natbony turned five-years-old and 18-years-old in the same place and with the same celebration— in Mrs. Johnson's Quaker Ridge kindergarten classroom with a group of five-year-olds singing happy birthday, wearing a silly hat and decorating cupcakes.

Rachel Natbony, a Scarsdale High School senior who has always thought she wanted to be an elementary school teacher, chose to do her senior options project with Jeanette Johnson, her kindergarten teacher.

"It is the alpha and the omega . She began her career in KJO [Johnson's kindergarten class] and she is ending her time here," said Jeanette Johnson, Quaker Ridge teacher. "It is pure joy. That is why we teach, to see these kids develop and become citizens."

Natbony has developed into a young lady who treasures music, a love she says developed in elementary school. Natbony brings her music passion into Mrs. Johnson's classroom every day. Natbony plays her guitar for the students and teaches them lyrics to songs like, "On Top of Spaghetti," "Firework," by Katy Perry, "Just The Way You Are," by Bruno Mar and more.

"It has been so nice to have Rachel bring in her guitar," said Johnson. "The students are learning memorization and vocabulary through song."

Natbony is happy with her senior options decisions saying "it is the best of both world, music and teaching." Natbony leaves Scarsdale in the fall for the education school at University of Delaware.

"I think from this I definitely want to be an elementary school teacher because I have a lot of fun and think I am good at it," said Natbony.
