SCARSDALE, N.Y. - A former New York Chief Judge is scheduled to speak to the Westchester League of Women Voters at their annual holiday luncheon at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club.

Jonathan Lippman, who served as the Chief Judge on the New York Court of Appeals from 2009 to 2015 will discuss the “Fairness of the Criminal and Civil Justice Systems,” at the annual event.

The annual League of Women Voters holiday luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club. The lunch will cost $100, with registration available via credit card or PayPal on the League’s website.

According to the League, as New York’s Chief Judge, Lippman “championed equal access to justice issues in New York and nationally, taking the leadership role in identifying permanent funding streams for civil legal services.” Under his leadership, New York became the first state to require 50 hours of law-related pro bono work and he helped establish the Pro Bono Scholars and Poverty Justice Solutions Programs to help those in need that face crisis’ in the legal system.

Since moving on as Chief Judge, Lippman has served as a legal counsel for Latham and Watkins as a member of the firm’s Litigation and Trial Department. He is tasked daily with heading the firm’s pro bono practice.

During his career, Lippman has received the William S. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence, - which awarded annually to judges that “exemplify the highest level of judicial excellence, integrity, fairness and professional ethics” - and was recently named as Chairman of the Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform.

Lippman preceded Judge Judith Kaye and has since been replaced by former Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore, who was appointed to the position by Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier this year.
