SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A White Plains woman admitted to stealing 21 gold coins worth about $30,543 from the Scarsdale family she works for as a housekeeper and selling all but seven at the White Plains Galleria Mall, police said.

The homeowner reported the gold coins missing and told police she suspected her housekeeper, Araceli Acevedo, 26, according to the police report. Acevedo turned herself in last Friday.

The Greenacres Avenue resident had taken the coins out of a safe-deposit box at CitiBank in April 2012 and stored them in a closet in her home.

Acevedo told police she stole the coins one at a time on different dates in 2012 and stored them in her White Plains apartment. She admitted to selling 14 of the coins at Michael Matthews Jewelers in the Galleria in November 2012, police said.

Scarsdale police confirmed four transactions of gold coins between Acevedo and the jewelry store through the White Plains Police Department. They could not reconcile the discrepancy between the amount of coins Acevedo said she sold the jewelry store, 14, and the amount for which there are records, four.

Police searched Acevedo’s apartment N. Kensico Avenue apartment and found the remaining seven coins in the attic.

She was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony. Unable to meet the $2,500 bail, she was held for court.
