SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Following the damage caused of Hurricane Sandy in the region, the Scarsdale Public Library partnered with Literacy in Motion to host a children’s book drive for victims.

A total of 134 boxes of books were collected during the program and they will be distributed to those hit hardest by the storm in the New York City area.

The books are available at book-vending kiosks that are set up in various places. Joe Musso, the director of Literacy in Motion said that it’s understood that there are more pressing needs, but that books can also serve as a necessary tool.

“While books are not an essential need in the way housing is, we believe that creating pop-up libraries in the emergency shelters and food pantries servicing Sandy victims will go a long way to restoring a sense of normalcy and improving the quality of life of those that are shelter bound for the foreseeable future,” he said.

New and used books were collected and distributed to the temporary libraries that were put up in shelters and recovery centers in the areas hardest hit by the storm: the Rockaways, Staten Island and Coney Island.

“We know that so many of our friends and family in the community were affected by Hurricane Sandy,” Scarsdale Library Director Elizabeth Bermel said. “We are encouraged by so many other organizations who are participating in relief efforts and we are gratified in doing our part.”
