Westchester Swim Conference Enjoys Perfect Day

RYE, N.Y. – Swimmers, coaches and volunteers from all over the county gathered at the scenic Westchester Country Club Pool on a perfectly hot swimmers' day Thursday for the 2012 Westchester Swim Conference Swimming Championships.

“Everyone is pleased with the weather and it’s a typical Swim Conference day following a busy week,” Meet Director Rob Flannery of the Bronxville Field Club said. “We keep an eye on the weather forecast and hope for best, and it happened for us this week.”

Westchester Country Club, the host team, was overall champion with 772.5 points, followed by Lake Isle (774.5), Wykagyl (639.5), Rye Golf Club (638) and Greenburgh (595).

The Westchester Swim Conference summer swimming season includes private and public clubs and pool teams encompassing the southern and central Westchester communities. Local meets are held in six divisions according to team size and strength through July and August, climaxing with a week of trials. Those were were held at Orienta Beach Club, Scarsdale Municipal Pool and Rye’s Coveleigh Country Club earlier in the week.

“We have great volunteers who do all the work through the year and during championship week,” Flannery said. “The thing that makes this a great event is having several venues and then the finals here at Westchester. We want the swimmers to enjoy this final week and it’s gone off very well.”

The Westchester Swim Conference Swimming Championships feature the top 16 swimmers from the qualifying rounds swimming in semifinals and finals. Swimmers ages 6 to 17 compete in age-group events including butterfly, freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Individual scores are compiled toward the team total.

“I really like the conference meet because there are so many good swimmers and it’s really fun to be here with our team,” Wykagyl Country Club 10-year-old Justin Gager said. “Everyone is having a good time.”
