Elliot A. Meister, 20, was found dead in a dorm at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., on April 27, according to media reports.
Meister, a sophomore and engineering student at Vanderbilt, was a member of the high school’s class of 2014 and was said to be an outstanding student, having been only one of three there to achieve finalist status in that year’s National Merit Scholarship Program.
According to myrye.com, a local blog, Meister's mother, Lotte, is an interior designer, and his father, David, is a partner with a law firm that specializes in representing corporations and individuals charged with white-collar crimes.
According to his obituary, Meister was an Academic All American when he graduated.
The Rye school district is offering grief counseling to students.
He is survived by his parents; a sister, Holly; and grandparents, Robert and Lennie Meister, and Erik and Gerda Andersen.
Services were held on Sunday, May 1, at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye.
His family said that donations in his memory can be made to the Addiction Recovery Center at Greenwich Hospital, c/o Greenwich Hospital Foundation, 35 River Road, Cos Cob, Conn., 06807.
