Playoff-Bound Eagles Travel To Stissing Mountain

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Dobbs Ferry football team will endure a long bus ride to upstate Pine Plains Saturday for a late season tune-up against Stissing Mountain High School en route to the Class C playoffs that begin in less than three weeks.

The Eagles (4-1), winners of four straight games including last week’s 34-18 victory over a surprising Pawling team, had not allowed a single point in their three previous wins. Pine Plains (1-5) has lost its last two games and has been shut out in three of its five losses.

Dobbs Ferry can score with any Class C team, but it has been the Eagles defense that has been consistent all season long. The only loss of the season was a 15-14 heartbreaker on opening day to rival Bronxville, the defending Class C champion.

The Eagles defense is led by All-State linebacker Darien Bica, linemen Brian Gardner, Dennis DeLeon, John Yozzo-Scaperrotta and linebacker Matthew Fata, and coached by former Dobbs Ferry football star Josh Tobacco, to whom head coach Jim Moran gives credit for the Eagles success.

“The great defense so far is all a credit to the kids who are out there,” Tobacco said. “I just sit there and daydream about being out there 20 years ago, and we let them fly to the football.”

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Spencer Avalos has shown outstanding skills in running the offense, running the ball and being able to use the pass when necessary.

The Eagles should not look ahead to the playoffs for at least one more week with a regular-season game with Rye Neck remaining before an opening-round playoff opponent is decided. But Stissing Mountain should not pose a big threat -- just a long, long ride to the country.
